About U.S. News "Best Hospitals" rankings

The annual Best Hospitals rankings are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for either challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures. For the 2018-19 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely or entirely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators. This recognition was earned through a rigorous analysis of 57 patient care standards that we exceed every day. It's Inova's ongoing commitment to personalized medicine that leads to better outcomes for our patients.
 

Award badge: Leapfrog safety award grade AAn "A" for Patient Safety

In May 2019, Inova Fairfax Medical Campus was again awarded an "A" from The Leapfrog Group's Hospital Safety Grade, marking straight "A's" for two years running. This designation recognizes our efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the United States.

The Leapfrog Group is a national organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns grades to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care.


National Award for Quality

Top Hospital badgeHighlighting our nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Inova Fairfax Medical Campus has been named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group.

    The Progressive Coronary Care Unit (PCCU) of Inova Fairfax Hospital has received the Silver Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).This award recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards.

    official seal: Aetna institutes of qualityIn 2018, Inova Heart and Vascular Institute was accredited as an Aetna Institute of Quality Cardiac Care Facility for consistently delivering evidence based, quality care for cardiac medical intervention, cardiac rhythm and cardiac surgery.

    The Aetna Institutes of Quality (IOQ) network was developed to help patients and their doctors simplify their provider selections. Their accreditation is based on the quality factors of experience, standards, support, and efficiency. Aetna IOQ facilities have been specifically selected for meeting (and surpassing) all of these criteria.

    Inova Breast Care Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital was the first Inova hospital to receive a prestigious three-year accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) and one of the very first in the DC metro area to be recognized (all five Inova hospitals are now accredited).

    Inova Fairfax Hospital has been accredited by Commission on Cancer since 1971.

    The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a program of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), recognizes cancer care programs for their commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality, and multidisciplinary patient centered care. The CoC is dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.


    Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx)

    APEX logoThe advanced radiation oncology centers at Inova Schar Cancer Institute are the first facilities in the world to earn the prestigious Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx) accreditation by the American Society for Radiation Oncology in 2015.
     
     
     

    Gold Plus Award for stroke care – American Heart Association "Get with the Guidelines" Program

    Badge for Get with the Guidelines gold plus certificationThe American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Stroke Association (ASA) have awarded Inova Fairfax Medical Campus the GOLD PLUS award for outstanding specialized stroke treatment. In addition, Inova Fairfax has attained the distinction of Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus.
     
    The "Get with the Guidelines" designation indicates that stroke assessment and services at the hospital provide patients with the best chance of survival. Read more about the "Get with the Guidelines" stroke program.
     

    Only Level I Trauma Center in Northern Virginia

    Inova Fairfax Hospital is the only hospital in Northern Virginia certified as a Level I trauma center, with the recognized expertise to care for the most traumatic, life-threatening injuries. Inova Fairfax Hospital Emergency Department receives about 88,000 patients each year.

    Telemedicine

    Inova Fairfax Medical Campus has received the Beacon Award (American Association of Critical Care) for excellence in remote care.

    Lung Care

    Inova Lung Services is 1 of 18 care centers in the US designated as a specialty care center by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as well as being a CMS Accredited Lung Transplant Center. Inova Lung Services – Fairfax is also recognized as a specialized treatment center by the Alpha 1 Foundation and WASOG.
