Overview

The primary goal of the physicians associated with the Department of Surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital is creating a compassionate and caring environment for patients where they receive the highest quality of healthcare.

As Inova's flagship hospital, a major referral center for Northern Virginia and the Washington, DC, metro area, and the only facility in Northern Virginia with a level 1 trauma center, Inova Fairfax Hospital has an extremely complex and diverse patient population. The Department of Surgery offers a full complement of surgical services by surgeons who are recognized leaders in their field to meet the varied and complex needs of its patients.

The department has more than 240 active medical staff members and a stellar group of volunteer community staff members within the following sections:

Commitment to research

The Department of Surgery has a robust clinical research program that contributes valuable new knowledge to the academic medical community. Clinical research projects include investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored studies to evaluate new surgical techniques, enhance surgical education and improve patient outcomes.

Department members are regular contributors to local and national surgical conferences, including the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. Recent publications in peer-reviewed journals have included the Journal of Surgical Education, Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, and International Surgery.

Medical education

Training the surgeons of tomorrow is an important part of the Department of Surgery mission. Its five-year Surgical Residency Program is comprised of 20 residents and it has two specialty fellowship programs in Surgical Critical Care and Advanced Laparoscopic, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery. Partnerships with other academic medical centers and the military allows the department to reach beyond Inova to act as a training facility for students from across the region, allowing them to take full advantage of the outstanding clinical educators within the department.
