Sports medicine treatment at Inova
Our sports medicine team is one of the few in the region with fellowship-trained sports medicine specialists – primary care physicians who received intensive training and education in sports medicine.
At our center, we use a collaborative approach to care. Our physicians, orthopaedic surgeons and other healthcare providers work together, drawing on their expertise to deliver an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan for each patient.

- Centralized services: We know your time is valuable. We’ve streamlined the care process so making appointments with a specialist or for a procedure is seamless and hassle free. You can find everything you need at Inova, including imaging scans, surgery, injection therapy and physical therapy.
- Personalized care: We go beyond assessing your injury when creating your treatment plan. Our team considers your overall health, activity level and performance or health goals. Your input is crucial in determining the most effective treatment for your injury.
- Advanced ultrasound procedures: We use ultrasound-guided injection therapy to treat many sports-related injuries. An injection delivers a substance, such as a steroid or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, directly to the affected area. Ultrasound guidance results in a more precise procedure and a more effective treatment, so you can feel better faster.
- Range of treatments: We offer the full spectrum of orthotic devices, including braces and shoe inserts. Our sports medicine-certified physical therapists and athletic trainers provide comprehensive assessment to determine if these treatments are appropriate for you. If you need surgery, our surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures so you recover faster.
- Holistic care: Our team includes experts in many areas of sports medicine, including sports psychology, neuropsychology, sports performance, nutrition, orthopaedic surgery, osteopathic manipulation and concussion management. Osteopathic manipulative treatment
Our team includes an expert in osteopathic manipulative treatment, also called osteopathic manipulation. Many times, we can treat or prevent injuries by manipulating, or moving, your joints and muscles. We often use this therapy in conjunction with physical therapy to treat joint pain, muscle pain, lower back pain and neck pain.
Injury prevention
Injury prevention is an important part of treatment for patients at any age. Our sports medicine-certified physical therapists and athletic trainers provide expert counseling and guidance to help patients take care of themselves. In addition, we have physical therapists and athletic trainers certified in Sportsmetrics™, a national ACL injury prevention program.
Injury prevention includes seeking medical attention for an injury before it gets worse, ensuring that equipment and gear fit properly and taking activity breaks. Comprehensive concussion care
We provide comprehensive concussion care, assessing the injury and determining when it is safe to return to play.

Sports injury surgery: what to expect
Our sports medicine team may determine that a surgical procedure will offer you the best outcome. We want you to feel as informed as possible about your procedure. Before your surgery, we will discuss with you:
- Any questions or concerns you have about the surgery
- What you can expect after your surgery (your recovery, rehabilitation plan and return to activities)
- Braces or sling: If you will require a brace or sling after your procedure, our brace specialist will prepare you for how to use and adjust it.
After your surgery, your surgeon will meet with you, often together with an athletic trainer. We will review:
- Your postoperative care, including brace or sling instructions, if necessary
- Activity limitations, physical therapy, and when you can return to your sport or work
