Minimally invasive treatments

Gone are the days when a woman must have a total hysterectomy to treat a gynecologic problem. Today, Inova hospitals have many less-invasive treatment options for conditions ranging from fibroids and heavy bleeding to some gynecologic cancers. Even if your condition is best treated by a hysterectomy, newer techniques and sophisticated equipment mean less discomfort and a quicker recovery. Inova offers advanced minimally invasive treatments for many gynecologic conditions and problems including:

Minimally invasive procedures

Inova's team of world-class physicians performs more minimally invasive and laparoscopic gynecologic procedures than any other healthcare provider in the Washington, DC, region. No matter which Inova hospital a woman chooses for care, she has access to a full range of services and access to some of the best technology available, including:
  • Laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopy): Allows a surgeon to remove tissue through a very small incision. Smaller incisions result in less blood loss, lower risk of transfusion, a shorter hospital stay, less need for pain medication, and a quicker recovery.
  • da Vinci® robotic assisted surgery: The surgical tools inserted into the patient via laparoscopy are connected to robotic arms that are fully controlled by the surgeon, resulting in unsurpassed precision.

Advantages of minimally invasive procedures

Inova's surgeons use the latest technology for all minimally invasive procedures. The surgeon makes small, pencil-sized holes in the body to insert tiny surgical tools and video cameras. The video camera provides a magnified view of the surgical site. You'll experience:

  • Less blood loss
  • Less impact on the body
  • Less post-operative pain and discomfort
  • Shorter or no hospital stay
  • Quicker recovery time
  • Earlier return to normal activity
  • Very small incisions and scars
