John J. Moynihan, MD, FACS
Chair, Department of Surgery
Dr. Moynihan is a board-certified general surgeon who currently serves as chief medical officer of Inova Fairfax Hospital. He is also chair of the Department of Surgery and serves as chairman of the Task Force on Surgical Care Improvement Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital. Dr. Moynihan is currently a professor who rounds with surgical residents, a clinical assistant professor with the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and a clinical assistant professor of surgery at Georgetown University. Dr. Moynihan has been very involved in the teaching programs at the above facilities teaching surgical residents and medical students. He has also volunteered his time presenting information regarding the medical profession at local area schools.
Dr. Moynihan's interest in advancing technologies and innovative approaches to patient care was initially recognized when he performed the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Inova Fairfax Hospital in 1990. Dr. Moynihan is involved in surgical education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and continues to advocate for the safe delivery of surgical care through multidisciplinary teams training in a variety of forums.
Jonathan M. Dort, MD, FACS
Vice Chair, Education
Dr. Dort, an associate professor of surgery for Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine Inova Campus, serves as vice chairman for education and program director for the general surgery residency at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Dr. Dort received his undergraduate degree with honors in chemistry at Florida Atlantic University and his medical degree from the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. He completed his internship at the Naval Hospital, San Diego, and his residency in surgery at the University of California, Davis – East Bay Program in Oakland, California. Dr. Dort was formerly the medical director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Carilion Clinic and associate professor of surgery at Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, Virginia, as well as chief of surgery at Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. He served in the medical corps of the United States Navy for 23 years.
H. David Reines, MD, FACS, FCCM
Vice Chair, Quality
H. David Reines, MD, FACS, FCCM, is professor in the Department of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine Inova Campus and vice chairman of quality, Department of Surgery, Inova Fairfax Hospital. Dr. Reines is also director of CME for Inova and vice chair of COGME, the Council on Graduate Medical Education.
Dr. Reines received his medical degree from the University of Vermont School Of Medicine in Burlington. He completed his surgical residency at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in Burlington and completed his critical care fellowship at the University of Miami in Florida.
Dr. Reines is a member of several professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and the Society for Critical Care Medicine. He served as president of the Metro Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Reines is the author of numerous peer-reviewed papers, chapters, editorials, and abstracts. He serves as a guest reviewer for the Journal of Trauma. Dr. Reines is the recipient of many teaching awards and has been instrumental in helping start the surgical residency at Inova Fairfax Hospital as well as the VCU medical student clerkship.
Sharon Bachman, MD, FACS
Director, Minimally Invasive Surgery
Interim Director, Research
Dr. Sharon Bachman serves as the director of minimally invasive surgery and interim director of research for the Department of Surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital. She is a specialty care physician board certified in general surgery, with over 15 years of clinical experience. Dr. Bachman has a special interest in management of complex abdominal wall and inguinal hernias, surgical education, and the techniques of minimally invasive surgery. She has an active research interest in prosthetic materials used in hernia repair.
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, she completed her surgical residency at the University of Connecticut. Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Bachman served as an assistant professor of clinical surgery at the University of Missouri Hospitals and as staff surgeon at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital, both in Columbia, MO.
Jill B. Watras, MD, FACS
Critical Care Fellowship Director
Dr. Jill Watras is the Critical Care Fellowship Director, Medical Director of the Trauma ICU, and a trauma surgeon at Inova Fairfax Hospital. She is also an Associate Professor of Surgery with Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine Inova Campus.
Dr. Watras received her undergraduate degree with honors in physiology at Michigan State University and her medical degree from St. Matthews University. She completed her residency at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD, and completed her fellowship in surgical critical care at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD.
