ACL Treatment
At Inova Sports Medicine, we know how frustrating it is to be sidelined by an ACL injury. Our sports medicine specialists customize treatment for patients with ACL injuries. Our goal is to get you back to doing the activities you love, pain free.
ACL injury: specialized care at Inova Sports Medicine
It’s the “pop” you don’t want to feel: the sensation of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) – one of the four major ligaments of the knee – tearing or stretching abnormally after a sudden twisting motion.
Inova Sports Medicine offers comprehensive diagnosis, advanced treatment and individualized rehabilitation for ACL injuries. We work with you to help prevent your ACL injury from affecting your athletic career or your physical activity goals.
At our center, you will find:
- Prompt care: You will get prompt attention to your injury when you arrive. We work quickly to determine the severity of your injury so we can plan appropriate, effective treatment.
- Expert team: Our fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians have a depth of expertise in all areas of sports-related injury and treatment.
- Convenient services: We offer “one-stop-shop” care, providing all your assessments, treatments and follow-up care right here at our center.
- Coordinated care: We work with coaches and athletic trainers involved in the student athlete’s life to ensure that your child receives ongoing, effective care. For adults, we work with your physical therapist to coordinate a rehabilitation plan that meets your needs.
- Personalized treatment: Orthopaedic care is not one size fits all. We perform individualized performance assessments to accurately diagnosis the severity of the injury. Then, we tailor a customized rehabilitation plan to reduce pain, restore range of motion to your knee and strengthen your muscles.
- Patient-centered care: We take time to listen. Your medical history, specific needs, activity level and health goals are important factors in creating a successful treatment plan.

What is an ACL injury?
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) connects the thighbone, or femur, to the lower leg bone (tibia) and stabilizes the knee joint.
ACL injuries are often the result of activity that requires a “plant and pivot” change-of-direction movement by the knees and feet, such as basketball, football, soccer or skiing. Women are more likely than men to suffer an ACL injury.
These movements also can injure your ACL:
- Sudden changes in speed (fast to slow, or stop) followed by a sudden twisting movement
- Overextending your knee and then turning
- Getting hit on the side of your knee
