Information on Health Insurance Exchanges

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) created guidelines for a new kind of marketplace for health insurance. Health insurance exchanges are available for you to shop for health insurance online.

Depending on the type of insurance coverage you wish to purchase and your total household income, you may be eligible for subsidies on the premiums you pay.

Inova wants our communities to be aware of health insurance exchanges. Watch the video below, or for additional information, go to https://www.healthcare.gov/

What are exchanges?

Exchanges (also known as “marketplaces”) are online markets where consumers and small businesses can go to shop for health insurance. On these sites, you can compare the health insurance plans that are available to you and then purchase a plan online.

Who creates and maintains the exchanges?

Each state has the option to create and operate its own exchange. If the state opts not to offer an exchange, a federal exchange will be available to the residents of that state (which is the case in Virginia). Outside of the government marketplace, private exchanges may also exist.
