Diagnostic Tests

Your successful treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis. At Inova Health System, we use the most appropriate imaging technology to diagnose your specific orthopedic condition. We have ready access to the full range of diagnostic tools, from the reliable X-ray to the most advanced and sophisticated technology available. Below are some of the diagnostic procedures we use to identify — and rule out — orthopedic conditions.

Visit our Radiology Services section for more details about imaging procedures at Inova facilities arrow

16-slice CT scanning

Computed tomography (CT) scanning uses X-rays to take pictures of cross-sections, or "slices," of your body.

DEXA is the abbreviation for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, a type of X-ray imaging used to measure bone density. We use DEXA most frequently to diagnose osteoporosis.

Fluoroscopy combines X-rays and computer technology for real time viewing of images.

Interventional radiology

Interventional radiology is a subspecialty of radiology featuring minimally invasive procedures performed with image guidance.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides an unparalleled view inside the body. Using a large magnet, radio waves and computer technology, MRI creates high-quality images of the brain, spine, joints, muscles, abdomen, breast, heart, prostate and blood vessels.

X-ray is the oldest and most commonly used type of imaging to examine different parts of the body and to help a physician diagnose medical conditions.
