PGY-1 Residency Program Overview

Curriculum

I. Orientation & Pharmacist Training

  • 1 month (July)
  • Comprehensive overview of distributive and clinical services provided by the Department of Pharmacy
  • Computer training
  • Resident lecture series

II. Clinical Rotations

Residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences as well as longitudinal experiences that last the duration of residency. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but can always be subject to change.

III. Pharmacy Practice Experience

  1. Routine staffing is performed monthly (~ 32 hours per month)
  2. Participation in clinical-on-call (COC) program (~ 1 week per month)

IV. Practice Management

  1. Dedicated rotation and longitudinal experience
  2. Committee participation, including Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T)
  3. Exposure to:
    1. Pharmacy informatics
    2. Drug Policy
    3. Medication Safety

III. Teaching opportunities

  1. Precept advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs)
  2. Participation in VCU School of Pharmacy Foundations Course (i.e. skills lab)
  3. Participation in VCU School of Pharmacy Teaching and Learning Certificate (optional)

IV. Conferences

  • ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting
  • Eastern States Residency Conference Mid-Year Clinical Meeting

Virginia licensure

  • Candidates must be eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia
  • Candidates must be licensed in the state of Virginia as a pharmacists by July 1st of the incoming residency year
