Frequently Asked Questions

How long has Inova's PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program existed?

Inova Fairfax Hospital has been training pharmacy graduates since 1989. The program became ASHP accredited in 1990. Our residents have gone on to pursue successful careers in many areas of pharmacy practice.

How many residents do you accept?

We have five residency positions available.

Where do residents live?

Most residents live within a 15-mile radius of the hospital. Since Inova Fairfax Hospital is located near a major freeway (the capital beltway) just outside of Washington, DC, the hospital is fairly accessible from all directions. Commutes typically range between 15 and 45 minutes in any one direction.

How often are residents on call?

Residents are assigned to clinical-on-call (COC) for one week a month based on a four-week rotation cycle with other members of the residency class. Responsibilities of the COC may include responding to drug information questions, assisting with management of medication problems, and other issues not resolvable by the pharmacist on duty.

Additional responsibilities the resident will encounter while on-call include implementation of any ongoing clinical initiatives that are being conducted by the Department of Pharmacy and serving as a clinical pharmacotherapy resource to members of the pharmacy and medical staff. A clinical specialist serves as backup for all COC issues.

Do you conduct interviews in the Personnel Placement Service (PPS) during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting?

No. We attend the residency showcase, but do not conduct residency interviews in PPS.
