Biography

Craig Cheifetz, MD, FACP, is the VP, Corporate Health and Premium Services. His clinical expertise is enriched by his passion for physical fitness and health education. For the past 20 years, he has made a positive difference in the lives of patients across the mid-Atlantic region.

Please note: Dr. Cheifetz is not currently accepting new patients, but please call 703-776-7005 to schedule an appointment with one of his partner physicians.

Dr. Cheifetz is a leading educator as the Regional Dean of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine Inova Campus and Director of the Inova Office of Undergraduate Medical Education. He has received several “Golden Apple” teaching awards and knows how to educate and motivate his patients to become healthier and more energized. He leads by example and his patients will tell you that “he gets it.”

Like many of his patients, Dr. Cheifetz struggles with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a family history of cardiac disease and cancer. Yet he practices the healthy lifestyle that he preaches. He is an avid runner and enjoys triathlons. He is also the father of three boys, the coach of their baseball teams, and a devoted husband. He understands the stresses of daily life, he understands individual needs, and he understands how to motivate. He cares for the whole person and tailors wellness programs to each individual.

Dr. Cheifetz has been an integral part of Inova and the Inova Fairfax Hospital medical staff for more than 15 years. He was recognized in 2012 for outstanding achievement by the American College of Physicians when he received the Walter J. McDonald Award for Young Physicians. He was also the 2011-2013 Chair of the AAMC Group on Regional Medical Campuses, which represents the interests of regionally located medical schools in the United States and Canada. The selection of Dr. Cheifetz to lead this group was based on his outstanding accomplishments with the development of the VCU School of Medicine – Inova Campus, while maintaining the highest level of quality education at Inova.

Dr. Cheifetz received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he received the Philip P. Sang award for outstanding communicator with patients, faculty and staff. He completed his internal medicine training at Georgetown School of Medicine, earning the ACP Donald Steinweg award for outstanding resident clinician and educator.

Dr. Cheifetz is one of a select few medical educators certified by Stanford School of Medicine to teach other doctors how to teach. He also received the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area Human Rights Award for his work with political refugees. His philosophy and dedication to his patients are seen by all those who meet, interact and are cared for by him.
