Non-invasive tests

Inova Medical Group Arrhythmia specialists perform a variety of non-invasive tests to help diagnose arrhythmias and continually monitor our patients’ health.

Invasive procedures

Depending on the severity of a patient’s arrhythmia, we may use invasive procedures to help us diagnose issues and correct heart rhythms. Our physicians perform these procedures with great care.

• Cardioversion
• Electrophysiology study
• Catheter-based cardiac ablation
• Cryoablation

Management of atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is the most commonly diagnosed arrhythmia. It is characterized by fast and irregular heart rhythms caused by electrical abnormalities located in the pulmonary veins of the left atrium.

Individuals experience the symptoms of atrial fibrillation differently. Some people may not feel any symptoms, and their condition will go unnoticed until it is detected by a physician during a routine examination. Others may experience only minor symptoms, while some are sensitive to the slightest sensation.

Symptoms commonly reported include shortness of breath, lightheadedness, palpitations and/or chest discomfort. Treatment may include one or more of the following:

• Medical treatment (drug therapy)
• Catheter ablation
• Device therapy

Device treatment

Implantable device therapy allows us to monitor and regulate our patients’ hearts as they go about their everyday lives.

• Implantable loop recorder
• Pacemakers
• Implantable defibrillator (ICD)
• Sub-cutaneous defibrillator (S-ICD)
• Cardiac synchronization therapy (CRT)
• Device generator change or replacement
