Inova Alexandria Hospital is a 318-bed community hospital located in Alexandria, VA, a few miles from the nation's Capitol and part of the Inova healthcare network of hospitals, clinics and care centers.

Inova Alexandria Hospital offers a full range of healthcare services and has received national designations for healthcare excellence, including recent recognition as one of the best hospitals in Northern Virginia by U.S. News & World Report.

Inova's mission is to improve the health of the diverse community it serves through excellence in patient care, education, and research. In accordance with this mission, the Pharmacy Department has developed the post graduate year one (PGY-1) Pharmacy Residency. The 12-month ASHP-accredited program prepares pharmacist clinicians for patient care positions in the inpatient setting.

The Pharmacy Department at Inova Alexandria Hospital achieves physician satisfaction scores within the 98th percentile.

Program features

Residents participate in all aspects of our comprehensive pharmacy services:

  • Rounding with multidisciplinary medical teams
  • Pharmacokinetic consultations
  • Antimicrobial stewardship drug monitoring
  • Anticoagulation monitoring
  • Experience with clinical pathways, protocols and core measures
  • Education and precepting of pharmacy students
  • Education of patients and other healthcare professionals

Rotations are designed to integrate clinical practice, drug-use evaluation, drug information and teaching. Each resident completes five required rotations including medication management and safety, internal medicine, critical care, infectious diseases and administration. Each resident can also choose to participate in the Teaching and Learning Certificate (TLC) Program and complete three elective rotations.

Residents completing this program will possess a depth and breadth of pharmacotherapy knowledge, effective communication abilities and strong leadership skills. As such, they will be able to demonstrate the necessary strengths as well as the clinical acumen to empower them to pursue specialized PGY-2 training or teaching opportunities as desired by the resident.
