Inova and Shenandoah University: Training tomorrow's healthcare providers

As Inova continues its journey as a leader in personalized health, including genomics and predictive prevention, it is imperative that tomorrow’s allied health practitioners be trained to provide care in this burgeoning field. This imperative led to the creation of a collection of degree and certificate programs offered by Shenandoah University both online and on the Inova Center for Personalized Health (ICPH) campus.

The organizations are partnering to utilize the new model of health care education to produce practitioner-leaders experienced in the interprofessional team-based care model. We graduate practitioners who are skilled, experienced and ready to work immediately upon their graduation.

The partnership captures some of the best features of an embedded training model, not only challenging students, but challenging medical centers to remain ahead of their practices. Programs are focused on practitioner training, and the certificates, specifically, are designed to serve the needs of current, practicing health care professionals at Inova.

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner serves as an educator, consultant, prescriber, therapist and researcher to enhance life quality for individuals with mental illness, and to prevent mental illness in high risk populations such as children, the elderly and those with co-occurring medical illness and/or substance abuse.

Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP)

The Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program focuses on the care of adults, from young adults (including adolescents and emancipated minors) to the elderly. An AGPCNP provides patient-centered, quality care for this population.

Master of Public Health (MPH) (online)

This online program will provide students with an opportunity to analyze current health problems from a variety of interdisciplinary and interprofessional viewpoints. The program provides coursework opportunities for students to obtain broad knowledge and basic skills in public health. Students will also be exposed to rural and underserved population health through advanced coursework, and will gain experience in applying basic skills and advanced knowledge to health problems in rural or urban settings during practicum training.

Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics & Precision Medicine

Launching in 2018, this master’s degree in pharmacogenomics is for health care professionals interested in exploring this fascinating field of study. The program blends traditional classroom, laboratory and online instruction to provide the flexibility practitioners need. Some of the areas covered include:

  • Genetic predictors of disease
  • Applying genetic principles to guide therapeutic decisions
  • Mastering genetic interpretation tools
  • Ethical, legal and social implications of the human genome

Certificate in Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) (online)

The online Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) certificate program is designed to help practicing healthcare professionals understand how technology is being implemented across the continuum of healthcare to improve quality of care, reduce costs and increase patient safety. The certificate will prepare clinicians to participate in informatics initiatives at their institutions by demystifying the world of HIT. Practitioners will learn about the principles, legal and regulatory aspects of HIT, secondary uses of data, clinical documentation, clinical decision support, privacy and security, health information exchange, and HIT enabled population health management.

Certificate in Pharmacogenomics & Precision Medicine (online)

The human genome is the key to the personalized health care of the future. This online program aims to expand a practitioner’s genomics studies and positions them to earn a master’s degree in the field, if they choose. This certificate will also provide pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners with both continuing education credit and a unique foundation that can be used to pursue specialized, poised-for-growth health care fields. This certificate allows healthcare professionals to:

  • Utilize available genomic information and resources to make better and more informed medication and dose decisions for patients and allow them to more effectively manage illnesses
  • Instill the confidence needed to order and interpret genomic tests correctly and explain the results to patients

Graduate Certificate in Public Health (online)

This innovative online Graduate Public Health Certificate program allows students the flexibility to earn this certificate from any location, and engage with students and faculty who have a shared drive and passion for making a difference. The Graduate Public Health Certificate is designed to offer working professionals, current health professions students, and other traditional and nontraditional students a way to advance their public health training. The certificate is affiliated with the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and consists of the four core courses and the introductory public health course that is required of all MPH graduates. In this certificate program, students will gain a foundation in the core principles of public health, including epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and administration, health communication, and social and behavioral aspects of public health.

Certificate in Patient Care Navigator

The Patient Care Navigator certificate program trains practitioners to coordinate and integrate patient care along the continuum of health care services and needs; helps build skills in delivering care coordination services within new healthcare models and patient settings; provides hands-on simulation/application exercises; and prepares practitioners to take national care coordination certification exams.
