Biography
Dr. Edward Chang is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in sports related injuries of the shoulder, elbow and knee. He is an attending surgeon at Inova Health System and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in Clinical Orthopaedics at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. His clinical interests include shoulder instability, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscal injuries, rotator cuff tears and elbow injuries in the overhead, or throwing, athlete.
He joined the Inova Medical Group in 2015.
Most recently, Dr. Chang completed his clinical fellowship in sports medicine surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). While there, Dr. Chang served as an assistant team physician to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, the University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball and volleyball team and men’s baseball team, and Duquesne University women’s soccer team.
Dr. Chang became interested in sports medicine during medical school, where he was first exposed to biomechanical research at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. During this time, he realized that it was possible to combine both his passion for sports and musculoskeletal care, which led him to seek further training in Orthopaedic Surgery and sports medicine.
Dr. Chang is committed to providing patients with the most current, evidence-based medical care to help them return to their sport or favorite activity. He is actively involved in both clinical and biomechanical orthopedic research as well as in medical education. He is the Director of Sports Medicine Research at Inova and is involved in the education of medical students and orthopaedic surgery residents. He has published numerous peer reviewed articles and book chapters and has presented his research nationally and internationally.
A native of northern New Jersey, Dr. Chang currently resides in Washington, DC. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf, tennis and basketball as well as spending time with his family and friends.
