Your primary care physician (PCP) may be either an internist or a family medicine doctor
Inova primary care physicians (PCPs, also known as primary care doctors) are either internists or family medicine doctors. Both types of PCPs focus on health promotion, disease prevention, patient education and counseling, and treatment of acute and chronic medical conditions, but there are also important differences between the two.
- Family medicine doctor – family medicine practitioners can treat the entire family and focus on preventing, diagnosing and treating disease in children and adults
- Internist – internal medicine doctors focus on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease that affect adults only
