5-Star Hospital: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

In February 2019, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital was again awarded a rating of "five stars" from the CMS, their highest honor, reflecting superior clinical quality and patient care.

All of Inova's hospitals were given star ratings for the award year 2018, and Inova still has the only hospital(s) in the Washington, DC metro area to receive 5-star awards two years running.

Hospital Compare was created through the efforts of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to help individuals compare the quality of care at over 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals across the country.

"Straight A's" in hospital safety

Leapfrog badgeInova Mount Vernon Hospital has again been awarded a grade of "A" for hospital safety by The Leapfrog Group. We have earned this important recognition every year since 2014.

The Leapfrog Group is a Washington D.C-based organization aiming to improve health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to approximately 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. Accredited by the Joint Commission

gold sealIn December 2016, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital was fully reaccredited by The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization. The Joint Commission accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

Other Joint Commission specialty designations earned by Inova Mount Vernon Hospital include:

  • Inova Joint Replacement Center – Gold Seal of Approval – for hips and knees
  • Inova Rehabilitation Center – Gold Seal of Approval – primary stroke center
  • Inova Rehabilitation Center – Gold Seal of Approval – stroke rehabilitation

U.S. News & World Report: Among the Best for Joint Replacement

For the 2019-20 awards year, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital has been ranked as “High Performing” in the specialties of Hip Replacement and Knee Replacement.


HealthGrades – 2017 Patient Safety Excellence Award

logo: Leapfrog award Inova Mount Vernon received the 2017 Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades, the national advocacy organization dedicated to helping consumers find the right doctor and right hospital for the right care.

This distinction places Inova Mount Vernon in the top 10% of all hospitals evaluated for superior performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications during their hospital stays. Inova Mount Vernon is one of only 460 hospitals in the nation to receive this distinction, and one of only 19 in the state of Virginia.

Press Ganey – Guardian of Excellence Award

Inova Mount Vernon has received the Guardian of Excellence Award in 2015, 2016 and 2017 from Press Ganey for emergency department clinical quality and patient satisfaction within the top 5% of all client hospitals.

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is fully accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons for providing the best in cancer diagnosis and treatment.



National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers - Breast Care Excellence

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital has been recognized with the GOLD PLUS and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus award by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. An advanced level of stroke recognition, it acknowledges hospitals for their compliance with the quality measures within the "Get With the Guidelines" Stroke Program.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Program: Accredited With Distinction

The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) program at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is the only program in Northern Virginia accredited “with distinction” by the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society, and one of just 600 in the United States to carry this highest-level accreditation.
