For Physicians

Information for referring physicians

The goal of the Inova Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Program is to partner with referring physicians to deliver efficient, effective and personalized care for patient requiring care for stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases.

Through a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach, the Center provides a network of non-surgical and surgical specialists trained in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease.

Program highlights

A stroke response nurse (SRN) performs an initial assessment on all patients who present with stroke-like symptoms. The SRN helps expedite diagnostic studies to determine if patient is a candidate for time-sensitive treatment with IV-tPA or mechanical thrombectomy.

The triage protocol of our Trauma Center and EMS partners includes a call to the SRN to evaluate all patients presenting with stroke-like symptoms.

Inova Telestroke Program is an innovative telemedicine option featuring real-time videoconferencing capabilities. The program makes it possible for Emergency Department doctors at participating facilities to connect with Inova board-certified neurologists 24/7 in the care of patients presenting with stroke symptoms.

CNS hospitalists at Inova Fairfax Hospital are dedicated to the care of neurology and neurosurgery patients, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The hospitalists work closely with nursing staff and case managers on the stroke unit. They also conduct daily multi-disciplinary rounds with the bedside nurses to ensure that all patient concerns are addressed.

Neurointensivists are available at Inova Fairfax Hospital to consult with other physicians involved in a neuro patient's care. These fellowship-trained critical care physicians are either neurocritical care board certified or board eligible, with special training or experience in the neurologic patient population.

Neuroradiology expertise features fellowship trained neuroradiologists to perform sophisticated minimally invasive treatments

Dedicated interventional neuroradiology procedure rooms, neurosurgery operating rooms with block time and a 16-bed neuroscience ICU provide the highest level of specialty care, along with a 28-bed stroke unit, 28 bed neuroscience unit which includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), and a Neurodiagnostic and Sleep Assessment Center located at Woodburn Road.
