Pre- and Post-Treatment Instructions for Laser Skin Resurfacing

Pre-treatment

  • Topical and/or local anesthesia will be necessary
  • Antibiotic may be prescribed to prevent bacterial infection
  • A pre-treatment bleaching agent may be recommended for application one month before treatment as well as after procedure to prevent hypopigmentation/hyperpigmentation

Day of procedure

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Remove contact lenses
  • Remove all jewelry
  • Suggest having a ride home

Post-treatment

  • Wash treatment area 2-3 times per day with a mild cleanser, saline or diluted vinegar solution
  • Use gentle, disposable paper towels to dry skin to avoid infection
  • Apply occlusive ointment to the skin after cleansing as well as every 3-4 hours
  • If you are a smoker, discontinue tobacco use until healing process has completed
  • Sleep with an extra pillow to elevate your head and help ease swelling
  • Apply a cold compress to the treated area and hold on skin for 15-20 minutes every 1-2 hours
  • Resume normal skincare routine once skin has healed (generally 5-7 days after treatment)
  • Redness can last 1-2 weeks or more (once skin has healed, makeup can be used to temporarily minimize redness)
  • Completely avoid sun exposure for first few days after treatment
  • If sun exposure is unavoidable, wear a wide-brimmed hat as well as SPF 50 broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen
  • If irritation, redness, tenderness or signs of infection occur, please contact physician immediately
  • Maintain physician’s recommendations for follow-up
