What is rosacea? Rosacea is a common skin disorder with a tendency to blush or flush more than normal. There are also visible broken capillaries. This redness occurs on the face, neck, ears, even the chest or back. Those with rosacea may experience dry, sensitive skin, even acne like breakouts, and a rough texture. Some may also experience dry, itchy eyes, with sensitivity to light.

Common triggers for a rosacea flare-up include becoming overheated, being outdoors in very cold temperatures, alcohol consumption, and eating spicy foods. It’s important to find out what causes your rosacea to flare and avoid those triggers.

Individuals living with rosacea often find that their skin is quite sensitive to the sun. As always, be sure to wear a minimum SPF 30 and remember to reapply often as SPF only lasts 2-3 hours. Those with rosacea may find that many skin care products can irritate the skin.  At Inova Medical Spa, I recommend the Naturopathica® organic skincare line as they are very gentle and calming – making them ideal for those with rosacea. I particularly recommend the Sweet Lupine Cleanser, Carrot Seed Oil, Calendula Cream and White Tea Mask. Our Licensed Master Aestheticians often use Naturopathica® products in varying facial services, allowing for a very calming, yet effective service.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacials can also help to minimize the redness and broken capillaries. Initially, a series of 4 treatments are recommended which will manage the rosacea. Treatments are spaced every 2-3 weeks and take approximately 30 minutes. One to two additional “maintenance” treatments per year are also recommended to maximize the benefits.
