Considering an Injectable Treatment for Wrinkles?
Ask the Right Questions First

Danielle AugustinoDanielle Augustino, RPA-C is a Certified Registered Physician Assistant with 10 years of experience in cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery. She has been trained to safely and effectively treat all skin types and has advanced training in dermal fillers, BOTOX®, ablative/nonablative lasers, IPL/BBL photorejuvenation, and laser hair removal. Danielle is one of the providers at the Inova Medical Spa in Ashburn, VA.

As aesthetic treatments like BOTOX® and fillers gain in popularity, more and more businesses are starting to offer these services. But, can anyone perform these treatments? Who should consumers trust?

Who can you trust for safe cosmetic procedures?

The first thing to know is that not everyone can perform these treatments. You may remember hearing a news story in 2015 about a woman who was told she was getting BOTOX® but was actually injected with snake venom. Sadly, this patient had severe swelling, disfigurement, and her face was paralyzed for a year.

It’s crucial to educate yourself on procedures done to your body and by whom. At Inova Medical Spa, we ensure that clients understand the benefits and risks associated with all treatments. They should also feel comfortable and empowered to ask questions.

Before receiving BOTOX (or other neuromodulators such as XEOMIN® or Dysport®) injections, there are several questions I would recommend asking your provider – regardless of where you go for your treatment. These simple questions can help to avoid undesired outcomes or complications resulting from fake or overly diluted neuromodulators. Below are my recommended questions, along with Inova Medical Spa's responses.

Questions to Ask a Provider Before Getting Injectables

1. How long has the business been in operation?

Inova’s answer: Formerly known as The Medical Spa at Nova, Inova Medical Spa has been in operation since 2005.

2. Is the business equipped to handle a potential medical emergency?

Inova’s answer: As an entity of the Inova Health System, our facility is clinically supervised by our Medical Director Dr. William L. Lang. Our team of certified physician assistants, licensed master aestheticians, and licensed massage therapists has received extensive medical training and is equipped to handle a potential medical emergency. Furthermore, we’re conveniently located in the same building as one of our Inova Primary Care practices which is staffed with board certified family and internal medicine physicians.

3. Who is performing the injections – what are their credentials?

It’s important to note that a medical doctor (MD), physician assistant (PA) or nurse practitioner (NP) have the ability to manage any potential adverse reactions associated with procedures.

4. How many years of injecting experience does the provider have?

It takes time to master injectables – several years of experience is ideal.

5. What type of neuromodulator is being injected?

Again, BOTOX may be more commonly known, but there are varying products on the market including XEOMIN and Dysport.

6. Is the neuromodulator visible on the counter?

The product should be drawn up in front of you so you are aware of which product is actually being injected.

7. Is a two-week follow up appointment available?

A touch up is sometimes required – be sure you can see the provider if this is needed.

Take it from a Pro: Don’t Go “Bargain Shopping” for Cosmetic Medical Procedures

Lastly, I recommend avoiding searching for the cheapest rate or a Groupon offer. There is a reason for heavily discounted services. Reminder, this is your body – it’s important to go with a trusted provider and be an informed consumer.
