May is Fibromyalgia Awareness Month. Fibromyalgia is a medical condition that is characterized by chronic pain, fatigue and mental fog. The pain often causes sleep problems as well.

When touch can be tolerated, medium to light touch massage can help to calm the autonomic nervous system, reducing stress and pain. Often this can lead to a solid night’s sleep which can be a rarity when dealing with chronic conditions like Fibromyalgia. Some clients prefer broad, deep pressure to stimulate the nerves. This type of controlled triggering of the pain receptors doesn’t have to cause pain to release endorphins and other hormones to relax muscle tension.

At Inova Medical Spa, many of our clients with Fibromyalgia also benefit from our Balancer Treatment. This is a compression therapy garment that provides a consistent wave of pressure from feet to waist. The pressure can be adjusted through inflation from a gentle touch which encourages lymphatic flow to a deeper pressure. Some clients feel that the regular cycling of the machine is more calming to their system than a traditional massage.

During cycles of increased sensitivity, massage may not be the best option for relief. At those times, a gentle Balancer Treatment may provide enough stress relief to let you get the rest that you need to escape from the constant ache and fatigue that keep you weighed down.
