Inova Trauma and Acute Care Surgery
Inova's highly trained trauma and acute care surgery team is based at Inova Fairfax Hospital and is available 24 hours a day. The surgeons are key to the operations of Inova Trauma Center, Northern Virginia's only Level 1 trauma center. Trained and certified both in surgery and surgical critical care, our surgeons perform emergency operations on trauma patients with acute injuries. Many of these patients require multiple operations for complex conditions that cannot be treated with a single surgery. They also care for serious cases requiring immediate intervention or who are hospitalized in the intensive care unit.

Inova's decades-long commitment to trauma care is reflected in the nationally designated Inova Trauma Center and its 24-hour-a-day availability of specialized emergency surgical care. Support for the clinical care of our patients includes specially trained orthopedic surgeons and immediate availability of neurosurgery, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, anesthesia and emergency medicine physicians. Our team also involves highly trained ICU, OR and trauma staff nurses as well as physical, occupational and respiratory therapists and nutrition and case management staff. Double the expertise
Trauma and acute care surgeons at Inova are extensively trained and experienced. All our trauma and acute care specialists are dual board certified in both surgical critical care and surgery. They have also completed additional fellowship training. The breadth of their experience means the patient:
- Receives seamless specialized care for his or her high risk and complex needs, which often includes both surgery and ICU care
- Undergoes surgery performed by a highly skilled surgeon who also, in most cases, serves as the primary care physician to oversee and manage all aspects of the patient's care while hospitalized
- Benefits from direct access to the hospital-based surgeon/specialist who can facilitate questions and concerns more quickly, leading to better patient outcomes and communication
In addition to their acute care responsibilities, Inova trauma surgeons also perform other surgical procedures for their patients, ranging from appendectomy to gallbladder and colon surgery.
