The Inova Children's Cancer Program is a highly respected program with a celebrated reputation for meeting the unique needs of young cancer patients and their families.

Our pediatric cancer experts work in tandem with Inova Schar Cancer Institute, one of the nation’s top 50 cancer programs, and are actively involved in clinical protocols for pediatric cancer research.

Our state-of-the-art 22-bed pediatric hematology/oncology unit was designed with a positive-pressure ventilated, protective-care environment. The unit is dedicated solely to the compassionate and advanced care of children with suppressed immune systems and other complications resulting from cancer or its treatment. The Inova Children's Cancer Program has several cancer-specific programs, including special care for childhood leukemia, neurological cancers, Hodgkin's lymphoma and renal tumors.

Research and Innovation

Actively working through research to improve treatment and care

Inova Children's Hospital is actively involved in national and international clinical trials as well as technological innovation in the science of genetics.

Pediatric clinical trials

Our clinical trial program is a member site of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a National Cancer Institute-supported clinical trials group. We are also the only member location of the COG in Northern Virginia. COG is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. By participating in COG, Inova Children’s Hospital is part of a network of more than 8,000 experts in childhood cancer at more than 200 leading children’s hospitals, universities and cancer centers across North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe in the fight against childhood cancer.

Genetic testing and pharmacogenomics

Through genetic research, we have a far greater insight into the causes and factors that contribute to genetic syndromes and inborn errors of metabolism, which include many rare pediatric diseases and disorders. Inova's genetic testing program for children offers evaluations on an inpatient and outpatient basis for a variety of conditions.

At Inova, genomic testing and research is housed within Inova Translational Medicine Institute (ITMI), a not-for-profit research institute that applies genomic and clinical information from individuals to develop innovative methods for personalized healthcare. Inova is the only health system in the U.S. that provides this pharmacogenomics test, known as MediMap, to newborns as part of our standard package of care.
