Adult Mental Health Services
Inpatient services
Inova Behavioral Health’s inpatient psychiatric units are
located within three of Inova’s world-class medical campuses:
Fairfax (Falls Church), Mount Vernon (Alexandria), and Loudoun
(Leesburg).
Our inpatient units provide our clients with safety, structure,
and stabilization provided by our experienced team of
psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, counselors, and case managers.
Therapeutic group activities, including creative art therapy, are
held throughout the day. ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) treatments
are provided on a case by case basis at the Inova Fairfax Hospital
location.

one of our inpatient units may be provided after a psychiatric
assessment is performed by one of our psychiatric liaisons at any
of Inova's emergency departments.
Inpatient locations
Partial hospitalization program (PHP)
Our partial hospitalization program fills a gap in mental health
services by providing supportive and structured crisis intervention
for individuals requiring more intensive mental health care than a
weekly counseling or psychiatric appointment can provide. It may
also be utilized as a step down from inpatient psychiatric
treatment.
Each PHP is led by a multidisciplinary treatment team including
board certified psychiatrists, licensed counselors, and registered
nurses, and utilizing evidence-based treatment modalities. An
individualized treatment plan is developed for each person. A
typical day at one of our PHP’s consists of a variety of daily
therapeutic and educational groups. Medication evaluation and
management are also provided by one of our board certified
psychiatrists. The overall length of stay varies on a case-by-case
basis and is usually one to two weeks.

Outpatient and medication management services
Inova's outpatient behavioral health services are available to patients who need acute care but who are not at imminent risk to themselves or others. Outpatient services include behavioral health evaluations and treatment services, medication management and ongoing care for diverse psychiatric disorders.
Staff psychiatrists and nurse practitioners provide assessments and medication management. We have licensed clinical staff available for those with insurance coverage (we accept most major plans; please inquire while scheduling your appointment)

Medication management services
Outpatient psychiatric medication management services are
provided at each of our outpatient centers. A psychiatric
evaluation for medication and ongoing medication management are
performed by our experienced team of certified psychiatrists or
psychiatric nurse practitioners.
Urgent psychiatric appointments are available at the Inova
Psychiatric Assessment Center (IPAC) by walk in appointment.
Depot medication
Long-acting medication administered intramuscularly by a
registered nurse is also available. Depot medication can be
particularly helpful to individuals who have difficulty
administering their medication on a daily basis.

Bariatric counseling and Individual therapy available
ECT, or electroconvulsive therapy, is an extremely effective treatment option for patients who are diagnosed with a range of mental illnesses especially patients with severe depression. This service is performed by highly trained clinical and nursing staff at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. ECT is usually performed on an outpatient basis, but it is available to inpatients as well.
