Kathy's Story
Working as a medical and surgical nurse at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, I knew the benefits of weight loss surgery and felt ready for the surgery after years of struggling with my weight and multiple unsuccessful attempts at diets.
I was hitting the big 50 and did not want to go into my golden years fat and unhealthy, joints hurting, blood pressure elevated. I knew the dangers of obesity could put me at greater risk for cancer, diabetes and heart disease, already in my family.
I had colleagues and friends who had improved their health with successful bariatric surgery at IFOH. Knowing the surgeons, anesthesiologists and care team, I felt safe there and comfortable with my decision.
Six years later I continue to maintain my weight. My blood pressure is under control, I have more energy and a feeling of well being that I have not experienced in a very long time. I've even run three half marathons!
My weight loss surgery opened a new career path for me and now I am a certified bariatric nurse and work with the bariatric team as a resource for patients like myself, supporting them through the surgical process.
