Program Overview
Virginia licensure
- Candidates must be eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia
- Candidates must be licensed in the state of Virginia as pharmacists by July 1 of the incoming residency year
Orientation
All new residents are expected to attend a formal orientation program during the first 6-8 weeks of the new residency year. The orientation program covers the following aspects: Inova Health System orientation, general computer training, hospital orientation, pharmacy operation and training.

Longitudinal Pharmacy practice experience
- Routine staffing is performed monthly (32 hours per month)
- Residents are required to be available for staffing six days over Christmas or New Year's holiday
- Participation in Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and Inova Health System committees (P&T Committee, Clinical Pharmacy Team, Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, Medication Safety, Critical Care Committee, Readmissions Committee, Stroke Team)
Oral presentations
- Case presentation
- Journal club presentations
- Poster presentation at ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting
- Formal presentation to report results of major residency project at the Eastern States Residency Conference
- Formal ACPE-accredited seminar
Major residency project
- Develop project proposal with submission to IRB (as required)

Manuscript development
- Primary authorship of a manuscript submission for publication to a peer-reviewed journal
Formulary review and medication use evaluation
- One new drug formulary review with presentation to Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
- Develop and conduct a medication use evaluation with final presentation of results to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
Teaching and precepting
In collaboration with the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Pharmacy, the Teaching and Learning Certificate (TLC) program will allow the resident to participate in a wide variety of activities related to pharmacy education. The focus is to introduce pharmacy residents to the many aspects involved in teaching including both didactic and clinical instruction. Residents will develop their own teaching portfolios and teaching philosophy.
Other teaching opportunities include precepting of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience 3 (IPPE3) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience 4 (APPE4) rotation students attending VCU School of Pharmacy as well as the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy at Shenandoah University.
