What are the Benefits to Inova's Trauma ACS Externship?

The Trauma ACS Externship emphasizes the coordinated, systematic manner in which a regional trauma system provides optimal trauma care to the community. This program is an uncompensated opportunity for college students to participate in an observational educational experience. Our goal is to give participants an in-depth view into the personal and professional rewards of a career in trauma care.

Externs follow the multidisciplinary trauma team, including trauma surgeons, trauma nurses, social workers, physical therapists and other allied healthcare providers. Externs also join the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department for a ride-along experience responding to emergency calls. During the program, participants interact directly with trauma acute care surgeons and are present during daily rounds, patient assessments, emergency resuscitations, and surgical procedures.

Trauma care is a vital component of a community’s emergency response system. Quality trauma patient care depends on committed people in a variety of healthcare occupations, along with state-of-the-art technology and equipment. Inova Trauma Center is dedicated to providing world-class trauma care and is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Northern Virginia designated by the Commonwealth of Virginia and verified by the American College of Surgeons.
