Zobair M. Younossi, MD

The commitment of Inova to support a fully integrated and seamless patient-oriented research program has resulted in a number of important accomplishments.

As of late 2008, the Betty and Guy Beatty Center for Integrated Research on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus has allowed us to meet a major goal – to bring together key components of our research programs to maximize efficiency and research productivity.

The ability to integrate clinical research, basic science research and outcomes research under one roof, along with a comprehensive research administrative support, enables our researchers to provide our patients, our physicians and our community with cutting-edge clinical research projects.

The center was made possible through the generosity of the Beatty family, who provided the funds for its construction. This state-of-the-art research facility includes administrative offices as well as laboratories, a research biospecimen banking facility, an outpatient clinic and a unique functional assessment laboratory for our Outcomes Research Program.

In addition to the obvious advantages of a new, centralized research facility, we have expanded and improved our administrative capabilities to enhance research productivity, efficiency and compliance.

Our research teams are academically active and are gaining international recognition. Teams representing our lung, cardiac surgery, and liver and obesity programs regularly participate in international scientific meetings. Our cancer research program launched new innovative studies, and our programs in pediatrics, neurosciences, orthopedics, cardiology and nursing continue to expand and become academically productive. Our liver and obesity research team's productivity led to another $5 million gift from the Beatty family to establish the Beatty Liver and Obesity Research Program.

Over the years, we have expanded our collaboration with local universities, industry, and other academic institutions. Inova's commitment to research has allowed us to provide initial funding support as Faculty, Seed and Student grants.

We are enthusiastic about the progress that we have made in the past few years. As our research portfolio, research teams and academic productivity grow, I see a bright future for our research goals achieving great clinical and academic accomplishments.
