Treatment for melanoma will depend on the progression of the cancer. Once a patient has been diagnosed and the "stage" of the cancer has been determined, the cancer care team and patient can discuss options and plan a course of treatment.

A patient may have a variety of doctors on the treatment team, such as a dermatologist, medical oncologist (a physician who specializes in treating cancer with protocols including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy), surgical oncologist (oncologic surgeon), and a radiation oncologist (a physician who treats cancer with radiation therapy).
