About Edward Chang, MD

Dr. Edward Chang is a specialty care physician board certified in orthopedic and sports medicine surgery at Inova Health System with more than 12 years of experience. He joined Inova Sports Medicine in 2015 specializing in sports-related surgeries of the shoulder, elbow and knee. His clinical areas of focus include shoulder instability, ACL reconstruction, meniscal injuries, rotator cuff tears and elbow injuries in throwing athletes. He serves as a team physician for the Washington Nationals; is a member of the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association; and is an assistant team physician for the DC Defenders.

Dr. Chang became interested in sports medicine during medical school, where he was first exposed to biomechanical research at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. During this time, he realized that it was possible to combine his passions for sports and musculoskeletal care, which led him to seek further training in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. He completed his clinical fellowship in sports medicine surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. There, Dr. Chang served as an assistant team physician to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball and volleyball teams and men’s baseball team, and the Duquesne University women’s soccer team.

Dr. Chang is committed to providing patients with the latest, evidence-based medical care to help them return to their sport or favorite activity. He is actively involved in clinical research and serves as the Inova Sports Medicine’s Director of Research. Dr. Chang’s research interest centers around return to sport following arthroscopic surgery. He has published numerous peer reviewed articles and book chapters and presented his research nationally and internationally. Recently, he received the prestigious O’Donoghue Sports Injury Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine for his work on blood flow restriction following ACL reconstruction. This award recognizes the best overall clinic-based, human in-vivo research in sports medicine.

Dr. Chang is also involved in the education and training of medical students and orthopedic surgery residents and fellows. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he is the Director of the Sports Medicine Clerkship. He has been voted “Top Clinical Educator” multiple times by his medical students. Dr. Chang is also the Assistant Program Director for the Inova Sports Medicine Fellowship, where he instructs future orthopedic surgeons in their final year of training.

A native of northern New Jersey, Dr. Chang currently resides in Northern Virginia with his family and their Wheaten Terrier, Mr. Bates. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf, tennis and basketball and rooting for his beleaguered sports teams: the New York Mets, Jets and Knicks.
