Welcome to the Inova OB-GYN Residency Program

Thank you for your interest in Inova Fairfax Hospital’s Obstetrics & Gynecology residency program. Our mission as a training program is to provide comprehensive clinical experiences, didactics and leadership opportunities that will enable our trainees to become leaders in women’s health.

group photoInova Fairfax Hospital for Women provides a state-of-the-art physical environment in which our residents learn and is a major referral center for complex obstetrical and gynecologic care. Our ACGME fully accredited program is comprised of 24 bright and talented residents. We initiated our OBGYN residency training program in 2013; however, training outstanding physicians in women's health at our institution is not new. Our large patient volume, range of acuity and diagnoses, availability of exceptional educational and clinical resources in addition to our team of respected physicians made Inova Fairfax Hospital a coveted training site for OB/GYN residents from other university programs for over 35 years.

In designing our residency program, we have created a learning environment that will not only provide a comprehensive clinical experience, but also close mentorship with faculty who support career exploration, research and personal growth. Simulation activities are integrated throughout many aspects of education. Our individualized curriculum focuses on the strengths and interests of each individual resident. As such, all residents are progressing through a competency-based and ACGME Milestones focused curriculum.

The residency program enjoys strong support from department and hospital leadership. Resident input is routinely solicited and integrated to improve the program. Our proximity to Washington, DC allows residents the opportunity to participate in patient advocacy, health care policy and reform. This website is structured to give you an introductory understanding of our hospital, our department and our residency training program. About Inova Fairfax Medical Campus

Artist rendering of Inova Fairfax Medical CampusInova Fairfax Hospital is the largest hospital in Northern Virginia and the flagship facility of Inova Health System. It is located on a 50+ acre campus ten miles west of Washington, DC. The medical campus actually houses four integrated institutions (Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Children's Hospital, Inova Women's Hospital and Inova Heart Vascular Institute). Combined, these institutions have over 900 inpatient beds. The site is also the location for the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine Northern Campus.

Inova Fairfax Hospital has a long tradition of supporting outstanding graduate medical education. The hospital currently has fully accredited independent residency training programs in family medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics and podiatry as well as affiliated residency programs in emergency medicine and psychiatry. The campus is also home to independent fellowship training programs in pediatric emergency medicine, psychosomatic medicine, minimally invasive /bariatric surgery and surgical critical care.

This broad institutional commitment to graduate medical education allows for the effective and collaborative training of over 100 residents during the academic year.

Inova Women's Hospital

On January 31, 2016, we opened the new Inova Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Our new facility provides a state-of-the-art physical environment in which our residents learn and practice. This 12-story, 665,000-square-foot building was designed with 33 labor/delivery beds, 120 maternity beds, 48 high-risk perinatal beds, a 14-room obstetrical and gynecologic surgical suite, a 108-bassinet Level IV NICU and an outpatient Antenatal Testing Center.

In 2018 the faculty of Inova Women’s Hospital delivered over 10,000 neonates; performed over 9,000 gynecologic surgeries; and attended over 25,000 clinic visits.

Department of OB/GYN

Team photoThe Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is one of the largest academic departments at Inova Fairfax Hospital with a total attending staff of approximately 150 physicians.

The residency program has a core teaching faculty consisting of 40 generalist obstetrician/gynecologists, six gynecologic oncologists, six perinatologists, three reproductive endocrinologists and five urogynecologists.

In addition to the provision of excellent clinical care, the Department is integrally associated with the Inova Translational Medicine Institute. This world-class institute is pioneering the field of personalized medicine which studies the identification of specific genes that are associated with a particular clinical condition. As a result of this research, the patient's treatment is able to be customized to specifically match their genetic information.

This combination of high clinical volume, a large teaching faculty and access to unique research opportunities makes the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Inova Fairfax Hospital an ideal place for training.
