About the Program

The Inova Fairfax Hospital Surgery Residency Program is fully accredited by the ACGME. The graduating chief residents routinely complete their training with over 1,000 procedures and have been successful in entering private practice or obtaining fellowships in their chosen fields of interest.

Protected educational time

Five hours of protected educational time are currently offered to the residents each week, including one hour of morbidity/mortality conference, one hour of a grand rounds presentation and three hours of problem/case based learning in our simulation center. The Advanced Surgical Technology and Education Center (ASTEC) is our new, 6,900 square-foot, state-of-the-art simulation center equipped with standard and virtual reality trainers, two complete mock operating rooms, and live telesurgery capabilities and a multipurpose conference room. Inova Center for Advanced Medical Simulation (ICAMS), an 11,000-square-foot hospital wide simulation center, opened in spring 2015 to serve the Inova campus of the VCU School of Medicine and all Inova clinical departments.

Research

The research division of the department continues to grow and now consists of a department epidemiologist/statistician, department research manager, trauma research manager, research project associates and three clinical research coordinators.

The research staff has enhanced our ability to participate in scholarly activity and grow our academic potential. Over the past five years, our residents have presented their investigative work at the local, regional and national levels, and have produced over 80 publications.

University of Virginia Medical School Clinical Campus

Inova Fairfax Hospital has been the home of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine Inova Campus. Twenty-five to 30 students per year spend their 3rd and 4th year clinical rotations here after completing their didactic during the first two years in Richmond. These students have been an integral part of the surgical services and rotate on all the teams. Residents participate actively in the day-to-day teaching of the students as well as leading formal didactic sessions and monitoring student presentations once a week to the department. Beginning in July of 2021, we will transition to becoming the new home of the University of Virginia School of Medicine clinical campus with the same full time presence of 3rd and 4th year medical students. The University of Virginia will also house research labs as a partner in academics on this campus.
