What is a PET/CT scan?

A PET/CT scan produces a highly detailed three dimensional image of functional processes in the body. It creates these intricate images using X-rays of cross-sections, or "slices," of the body. This process allows earlier and more accurate detection of diseases.

How does it work?

A small amount of glucose called FDG is injected into a patient for absorption by the body's cells. Since FDG molecules are absorbed quicker in fast-growing diseased cells, concentrated amounts of FDG will pinpoint diseased tissue. This results in images that map the location of the diseased tissue within the cross-section X-rays.
